The Wild Swans
Author: Jackie Morris
Genre: Fairy Tale
Release Date: October 1, 2015
Publisher: Frances Lincoln Children's Books

Description:

This very beautiful and lyrical extended version of the fairy tale 'The Wild Swans' by Hans Christian Andersen is the much anticipated companion to East of the Sun, West of the Moon. With strong characterization of the heroine and also with more rounded characterization of the wicked stepmother than in the original version, and with delicate watercolor paintings throughout, this is both a wonderful story and delightful gift. Beautifully presented in a jacketed edition with foiled title.

The Wild Swans is my most recently released book. Often when I go in to schools children ask me how many books I have written, and I can honestly say I have no idea. My problem is, and has always been, that at the end of the day I prefer to spend my time drawing and dreaming than doing anything else.

When I was at school I was often reprimanded for drawing, for dreaming. Now I get paid to do both of these things. It’s my job.

I live in a small house beside the sea in Wales, with cats and dogs and a general level of untidiness. My father once suggested that I had ‘enough books’ in the house. The concept of what is ‘enough books’ has since haunted me. How can there be ‘enough’? Especially when such good books are being published every week.

I love to read. I love the places reading takes me. Now and again I stumble to a halt in the midst of a book astonished that an author can build a world from 26 letters of the alphabet, can make characters that become friends, can entertain, can make me sad, can teach me things. And I love to write.

Since working on The Wild Swans I have returned to knitting. In the book the heroine has to knit in silence to save her brothers. Stitch by stitch, in silence and how, oh how much do I love the lack of human sound in the world. I write on top of the hill above my house. Often the only sounds are the birds and the insects and the wind in the heather, and now and again the soft mournful calling of seals. It’s a world made for dreaming in.

I am currently illustrating 4 book covers for Robin Hobb’s Rainwilds series in the UK and reading Pillars of Light by Jane Johnson.
Jackie Morris lives in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with children, dogs and cats. Ever since leaving college, Bath Academy of Art, at least one cat has watched over her while she works. Big cats and small are a passion in her life, and it was while reading and watching her cat Pixie sleeping in winter that the idea for I am Cat came about. Among her many books for Frances Lincoln are The Ice Bear, The Snow Leopard, and Tell me a Dragon.
