Best Advice for Aspiring Authors

Here’s years of painful experience all summed up for you: don’t “aspire” for too long. I spent years and years writing in secret, reading tons of craft books, sitting in the very back row at writing conferences, but never submitting my work. I started lots of books that I never finished and squirreled away countless short stories and poems.

At one point, I became so disheartened and discouraged that I burned all my unpublished manuscripts in a fireplace. Very dramatic of me, right? I might have to use that in a book someday.

It’s terrifying to put your work out there, but if you want readers you have to do it. Honestly, it’s not easy. I spent years in a critique group with published authors who pushed me and mentored me to the point of publication. If it hadn’t been for their support, I couldn’t have done it.

I don’t have thick skin but it’s getting thicker. Bad reviews hurt, tough critiques frustrate me, and first pass edit letters from my editor make me want to hide under the covers, but when the criticism is constructive and comes from people I trust, I absolutely listen. This “thick skin” part of being a writer is difficult but necessary.

Find people farther along the path than you are, mentors who are smart, kind, and honest. Learn from them. Then someday when you’re the published author, pay it forward by helping new and aspiring writers.

I guess Yoda said it best: “Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”

(And chocolate…make sure to stock up on that, too.)
Lisa Brown Roberts still hasn't recovered from the teenage trauma of nearly tweezing off both eyebrows and having to pencil them in for an entire school year. This and other angst-filled memories inspire her to write YA books about navigating life's painful and funny dramas, and falling in love along the way.

Her almost forever home is Colorado, though she occasionally pines for the days when she lived within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean. Her house is full of books, boys, four-legged prima donnas, and lots of laughter.
