“Top 10 Favorite or Influential Books and Why”

This is a great question, but also a hard one because there are so many books that have influenced my writing. But first of all, I have to admit that I’m a victim of the educational system. Yeah, a weird thing to say, but let me explain myself. My teachers made me read all these classics with these ultra-deep meanings, and look what happened to me because of it? Though I’m happy about it, I’m definitely a schizo-writer—my narration is modern, but then I throw in all these olden-day words that everyone has to look up . . . and I can NEVER resist throwing in all these twists and deeper meanings into these otherwise, bubblegum-style books. Needless to say, the novels that have inspired me are an eclectic collection indeed.
 

So first for the classics:
1-Ivanhoe: I fell in love with Robin Hood and the Black Knight in this one. And then of course, there was that love triangle with Ivanhoe, Rebecca and Rowena. If I EVER write a screenplay for this one, I’m definitely emphasizing the bad-boy love Brian de Bois-Guilbert had for Rebecca).

2-Lorna Doone: I just have a passion for Scotland. I don’t know if it’s because my ancestors are from there and we have our very own clan or if it’s the guys in kilts, but this was the perfect story for me. Think about it—love story, adventure story, takes place in Scotland. Oh yeah, the best book ever!

Now for the more recent books:
3-World War Z: Really! I just love zombies. But what I also appreciated from this book was the real voice that came from it. Each character seemed like they came from a different author, they were so varied. That’s something I’d like to perfect in my own writing.
 

4-Hunger Games: I couldn’t put the books down—thankfully they were all out when I read them or I would’ve died with anticipation. I thought Suzanne Collins did an excellent job with her action/ adventure. I was on the edge of my seat and terrified of what was going to happen next.

5-On Little Wings (a modern day To Kill a Mockingbird—that’s the only way I can describe it): It won Amazon’s best breakthrough YA novel last year, and yeah, I discovered it FIRST (well, in my mind). It was rich in description—something I only wish I was more adept at. It took place by the sea in an eastern town where I was immediately sucked into the story. It was about an aunt and her niece, so how could I not be touched? And of course, the love story was so sweet. It was about first love, and losing love, and finding it again. I was so teary-eyed reading it.

6-Uglies Series. I was fascinated, and even better, it spurned lots of arguments with my friends—some who hated the main character, some who loved her—which just goes to show you can’t please everyone, writers! It gave me the idea of putting all of my trilogies out at the same time because though I liked this series, I don’t know how faithful I would’ve been in reading all of them if the books weren’t all available to me at once.

7-Paranormalcy Series. Initially I was annoyed that there was another faery book out with my same kind of narrative style (just because hers came out first and I hate being second), BUT Kiersten White (the author) immediately won me over with her quirky narrative voice and awesome romance. I was also happy to note that we went different directions where plot was concerned (a relief). It was a nice easy read and super fun. It also made me hopeful that my books might also find a similar audience.

8-All Creatures Great and Small: This book inspired me to be a veterinarian . . . which uh, didn’t really happen, but I can dream, right? The way he describes animals is genius, and the Yorkshire countryside, and the creepiness of the old creaky house. Yeah, I think everyone should know about James Herriot. He’s an amazing author.

9-DragonLance Series: Strangely enough, this made a HUGE impact on my writing. I picked up a book from the series in the fifth grade because my older brother was reading it and I wanted to be cool like him, and I FELT like I lived it. I didn’t understand trilogies at the time, so I read the second one in the second series out of order and I cried and cried and cried when I thought Tasselhoff died. My brother dried my tears and told me there were more books. My world exploded after that. That’s when I became a real bona fide closet nerd.

10-Regency romance books: Must there be a specific one—they’re kind of all Jane Austen knockoffs? And oh, how I love them—and Bonnet movies, too (but that’s a different story altogether)! I know it’s hard to admit, but they made up my childhood (I wonder if that’s the reason for all of my Victorian ideals?). Though many of these books are cookie-cutter, I actually don’t care—they do romance well and when these novels are done right, they get me every time. I’ll sit down intent only reading the first chapter . . . and a whole afternoon later, I’m thinking, “Hey, where was I for the last four hours? Am I in London or Bath or . . . ?” They are living proof to me that we are genre readers. Someday I’m going to write one of these ‘bonnet’ books (probably with a crazy twist though, it is me we’re talking about).
